Complete Guide to Fabric care symbols: How to Care for Your textiles

Símbolos lavado de la ropa

There are five basic washing instruction symbols: the Tub, the Triangle, the Square, the Iron, and the Circle.

These symbols, also known as washing symbols, are more than simple pictograms; they are your guide to perfect washing, drying, dry cleaning, and ironing. Engraved on care labels, these graphic wonders tell you exactly how to care for your favorite garments.

There are different standards for care labels for different countries/regions around the world. In some standards, pictograms coexist with or are complemented by written instructions.

International Standards, French Innovation: GINETEX

At the epicenter of excellence in textile labeling is GINETEX, the European association based in France. Founded in 1963, GINETEX leads the way in defining labeling standards, ensuring that academic conferences from the 1950s become the gold standard for textile care.

The secret behind textile washing symbols: More than words

The care label goes beyond simple words; it becomes a visual code that unveils permissible treatment, preserving fabric integrity. Its goal is to accurately describe how to treat the garment without compromising textile quality. In the case that treatment is necessary or sufficient, mention is omitted. Protection of these symbols is essential; their use is governed by license conditions, and any incorrect labeling is strictly prohibited.

Dabedan’s tip: Follow the instructions for optimal durability

The key to fabrics that withstand the test of time lies in following the manufacturer’s instructions. At Dabedan, we know that each fabric has its story, and properly caring for it is essential to maintain its core characteristics.

The images below clearly present all essential washing symbols. Protected and required by license conditions, these symbols are crucial for proper textile care. Pay close attention: a bar beneath each symbol indicates the need for a gentler treatment than usual, while a double bar suggests exceptionally delicate treatment.

Understanding laundry symbols on clothing labels is essential to properly wash clothes and maintain their quality. Symbols on clothing often indicate the correct wash cycle, whether a washing machine can be used, and the maximum temperature in degrees Celsius. Some care symbols show a tub for washing, while others use letters inside the circle to guide professional cleaning methods. Instructions also cover the suitable type of bleach, appropriate spin speed, and other essential care instructions. Following these signs ensures that your garments last longer and stay in their best condition.

Flame-retardant and velvets: Following instructions

Even the most special fabrics, such as fire-resistant and velvets, are not exempt from these washing instructions. Rigorous compliance is key to preserving their unique characteristics and maintaining quality over time.
